Natural Fibrolites Overview
Fibrolite also known as sillimanite, is a silicate mineral which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. The crystals often occur as long slender prisms without distinct terminations.
They have one direction of cleavage parallel to one pair of the prism faces and are frequently fibrous, hence the name fibrolite. Fibrolites are frequently fashioned en cabochon and are well known for their remarkable chatoyancy or cats eye effect.
The chatoyant effect is a result of the reflection of light from the fibrous material.
