Natural Kunzites Overview
Named after the U.S. mineralogist G.F.Kunz, who first described this gem in 1902.
The colorings agent is manganese. Stones are mostly light colored; colors can fade. Brownish and green-violet types can be improved in color by heating to about 300 degrees F.
There are frequently aligned inclusion such as tubes or fractures. The stone has a vivid vitreous luster. The Table facet must be perpendicular to the main axis of the stone.
Depending on the direction one is viewing kunzite, it will appear as different colors. It will be clear from one direction and pink from the other. As a result, it needs to be cut carefully so that the pink will show through the table facet.
