Natural Rhodolites Overview
Natural RhodoliteRhodolite is found mostly in the gem gravel of Sri Lanka, in small deposits of waterworn pebbles. Because of this, large stones of five carats are considered rare. In addition to Sri Lanka, most rhodolite today comes from Thailand, Brazil, India, and several countries in Africa. Rhodolites from Thailand are similar in colour to the violet rubies that can sometimes be found there today, although these two gems have nothing in common other than their country of origin.

Since the rhodolite and the ruby are not of similar structure, a trained gemologist or jeweller can easily tell one from the other by putting the gem through some simple tests. Although large solitaires can be quite costly, more affordable smaller gems of one or two carats are generally within the consumers' reach. For those even more budget-minded, rhodolites are sometimes encountered in sterling silver or gold plate.
